Matera Guided Tour — Full Day
One city. Thousands of years of history. One full day to begin to understand it.
This Matera guided tour exists because two or three hours are not enough.
Matera is one of the most layered cities on earth — thousand years of continuous human settlement, compressed into a landscape of caves, churches, cisterns, and stone streets that fold into each other in ways that take time to read. A half day gives you the highlights. A full day gives you something closer to understanding.
The pace is unhurried by design. In Matera, locals have a saying: t‘ ha stè tranguill — roughly, “take it easy, what’s the hurry?” It is not just a phrase. It is how this city is meant to be experienced. We walk slowly, stop when something deserves it, and follow your curiosity rather than a fixed script.
What the full day makes possible
With a full day we can go further — more underground sites, more cave churches, more of the hidden corners that a shorter tour has to skip. We can visit the Civita, the Piano and both Sassi districts without rushing past anything. We can include a Museum on request.
The tour can also include a private wine and food tasting in one of Matera’s cave restaurants — the natural conclusion to a day spent underground.
- Duration: full day (approximately 5-6 hours, with a lunch break)
- Private: your group only
- Conducted entirely in English
- Museums available on request
- Can be combined with wine tasting
The multilayered architecture of the Sassi, only apparently chaotic, but rather developed through the armonic shared knowledge of its ancient community.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the difference between the half day and the full day Matera guided tour?
The half day covers the essential Sassi — the highlights, one or two underground sites, and the key viewpoints. The full day adds time for much more, to focus on any particular topic or just explore more areas of the Old Town, that is much bigger than you think!
Q: Is a full day Matera guided tour too long?
Not with the right pace. Matera rewards slow exploration — the more time you spend, the more layers you see. Most guests who do the full day say they could have stayed longer. The ones who rush regret it.
Q: Can we include the Archaeological Museum?
Yes, on request. The Ridola Museum houses ancient artifacts from sites across the territory. For guests with a serious interest in archaeology it is a natural extension of what you see in the streets. Allow an extra hour.
Q: How much does the full day Matera guided tour cost?
Tours are priced per group, not per person — rates depend on group size. Contact me for a personalised quote.
Q: Can the tour be combined with a wine tasting?
Yes — breaking the tour with a private wine and food tasting in a cave restaurant is a natural fit for the full day experience. Get in touch and I’ll put together a full itinerary.
